Putting Your Business Online: Are You A Smart Beginner or Smart Professional?
73Smart Beginner Vs. Smart Professional
In this hub we'll get clear on where you're at in your business development process online.
We'll examine the difference between a Smart Beginner and a Smart Professional.
Then we'll discuss what to focus on now, depending on which group you fall into.
Last, I'll answer questions to clarify why it's so important to approach your online business in the way we've laid out here. Enjoy!
Any of These Might Describe An Internet "Smart Beginner"
- You don't have a business but you want to create one on the Internet.
- You have a business and you want to take it online.
- You've heard you can generate leads and get prospects calling you, and you want to do that.
- You've heard you can make some good money with affiliate marketing, blogging, a website and social media, and you're not sure where to begin.
- You may have started setting some things up online (a website or blog, social media, video, etc), but you're still not sure how to make it all come together. You're not producing leads or income yet.
Any of the above describes a Smart Beginner. In a moment I'll share exactly what a Smart Beginner should be doing now... to move toward a successful online business in the most efficient AND effective manner possible.
What's A "Smart Professional"?
Smart Professionals range from being new to the game to having matured and mastered a niche.
If you're a "New" Smart Professional:
- You generate leads and have earned 'some' income but not nearly enough to sustain yourself full-time.
- You understand the concepts generally, but you may not have mastered or even fully identified your niche yet.
- You may or may not have a product of your own yet (perhaps you've only referred to other people's products up to this point).
Then there are "Seasoned" Smart Professionals doing well financially:
- You earn a great income and have mastered online lead generation.
- You even have your own products and services
- But... You know there are areas where you could improve significantly, such as improving your brand and presentation (message, graphics, images, book covers, etc), or your ability to increase sells through maximized monetization (more products, applying upsells, adding more value), etc.
- You'll always be Perfecting Your Cash-Flow Model

Your Next Steps To the Next Level
Whether you're a Smart Beginner or a Smart Professional, or somewhere in between, nearly everyone here has a natural curiosity and desire to move to the next level in their business.
But what I'm seeing happen out there, and I mean it when I say it is painful to watch, is people are 'all over the place.'
Smart beginners often try to do things that are impossible without having first done something else. I see them fail at it, get discouraged and lose precious time.
I also often see 'new' Smart Professionals doing things that take them so far off track it can take them months to get back to the momentum and focus they had. Sometimes they never get back there.
They didn't know how close they were because they didn't recognize what path they were on--They got distracted with a 'money making opportunity' before they actually had a marketing presence built up enough to do anything with it!
Below I'm giving you a detailed and definitive list for Smart Beginners and Smart Professionals so they recognize where they've been, where they are now, and where they need to focus next.
Last, I'll share what one should do FIRST before doing something else (like PPC for example), so they don't wander into new territory prematurely.
Steps For A Smart Beginner To Focus On First
(Each of the below are covered thoroughly inside Renegade Professional)
- Start sketching out your Cash-Flow Model and Smarter Marketing Funnel
- Learn the basic concept of how leads are generated on the internet (you may not know how to do it well yet, but understand how others do it well).
- Create your first working lead capture page that links to your own email management system.
- Start writing emails that are set up to automatically go out to your list
- Get familiar with the following social media / content posting locations / terms, AND -- understand the concept of how others use these to generate leads and business: Video marketing like at YouTube.com, article marketing like at Ezinearticles.com, social content marketing like at Squidoo.com, Hubpages.com, bookmarking, commenting, blogging, facebook, twitter (there are more but if you have accounts at these locations I've listed, and have at least dabbled at each of them you can cross this one off your list as a Smart Beginner). At least get comfortable with posting content at each of the above locations (if you aren't familiar with these you just can't attract people online--they'll know you know nothing about modern marketing and that's not going to look good).
- Set up either a blog, website or both (not required but highly recommended to at least have a blog because you'll learn more quickly than anything else through that process & it may be your rocket ship).
- Understand what a "niche" and "target market" is and start working on identifying yours while creating value to attract them
- Create a clear understanding of the difference between spam and value, and be able to explain the difference (we're not referring only to email spam but also commenting spam, social marketing spam, facebook and twitter spam, article spam, etc.
- Understand fundamental SEO (just the basics)
- Generate at least a few leads through your own lead capture page(s)
All of the above can be learned and accomplished at Renegade Professional.
If you've done all of the above you can move onto the "Smart Professional" list.
How A "New" Smart Professional Moves To Higher Success
- As always focus most of all on building your Cash-Flow Model (I sometimes refer to this as a "smarter marketing funnel")
- Focus heavily on building up BUZZ at the "Power 5 Social Media" locations to build up a presence there, follow and build relationships with influential people in their industry/niche, and begin building relationships (by posting, getting on phone, etc) with the most active people who follow the influential players. This leads to exponential growth in learning, new opportunities, and future sales through their referrals.
- Continue applying fundamental SEO as you go about your business (with links to your top content with key words and relevancy in mind). This does not need to be a time consuming task but something you simply apply naturally as you add content to the web over time.
- Closely study and model what other successful people are doing in your niche with their marketing funnels (lead captures, offers, products, etc). Begin narrowing your niche and your offer based on what you learn.
- Create multiple lead capture pages with different offers and use the Power 5 Social Media locations (as well as your blog/site and other marketing you learn by this point) to TEST which offers and messages are of most interest to your target audience.
- Create a product based on what you learned that you add to your marketing funnel.
- Continue improving your message, offers, copy, emails, contacts/relationships to increase leads and sales through your funnel for your own product.
- Seriously consider adding more value to what you offer through becoming a paid coach and/or consultant (this creates credibility) and continue creating products for new related narrowly focused niches. These can help you build out more cash-flowing Sweet Spots. See Cash-Flow Your Dreams for more about these valuable sweet spots.
- Significantly work on your brand (message) and packaging (using photos, images/graphics, better design, professionally shot video, etc) to increase the perception of the value you offer.
- Consider using PPC (and other forms of online advertising) to drive more traffic through your funnels now that you know your target audience and have narrowed your niche, message and professionalized your brand.
- Seek opportunities to give value to large online communities in order to gain faster increased exposure and traffic to your blogs, video and create name recognition in your niche.
- Seek opportunities to partner with others to create joint products or to do side promoting (they email their list promoting you if you email your list promoting them, as just one example).
For help creating your own products, narrowing your niche, and increasing your value as described above, stay plugged into Renegade Professional
Answers To Common Questions I've Been Asked
Question:
Many people have asked me why I don't recommend they start with PPC (advertising) to generate tons of leads before they go out and learn social media (they perceive social media as time consuming).
Answer:
Because most of the people who do that end up wasting a TON of money.
Here's why:
If you don't know your niche or message, and don't really know much about anything...then you can't do well with advertising. You can't attract people on the phone because many will know more than you do! You need an accelerated learning course first like we teach at Renegade Professional's 90 day action plan... and to stay plugged into new training added.
I suggest learning more about Internet marketing, lead generation, who your target audience is, what your niche is, and what YOU can uniquely offer BEFORE spending a bunch of money.
Social media and going about this as I have outlined above allows you to safely develop your business in a sequential order that makes sense.
Social media is a safe place to discover your entire business model. It's an incredible opportunity to discover yourself in business, who you want to offer stuff to, and what you want to offer, and to learn what works and doesn't.
Next Question:
Some people ask me if they should join a network marketing opportunity before or after they build their online presence.
Answer:
This depends on you, your background in networking, and how closely aligned the opportunity is with your long term goals in business and your passion.
Fundamentally, I suggest people at least get to the Smart Professional phase before shopping for a network marketing opportunity. If you're already in one and that's why you got started, I still suggest making your #1 priority developing influence and an audience (and a leads list) who actually is interested in what you have to say and offer. Without that, you're back to square one cold calling leads, spamming (using auto-dialer or email harvesting software, passing out fliers at the mall, or hard core face to face sales pitching--none of which I recommend).
Some ask if they really need to create their own products?
Answer:
Yes. However, I consider a free offer that entices people to fill out your lead capture page as a product.
If you have any additional questions, or you disagree with me please feel free to correspond with me below.
Regardless of the level you're at, follow along with me as I take you through building out your Cash-Flow Model.

Mike, I couldn't find the box to check "Dumb Beginner". I've got more money than brains (that doesn't take much though). I've bought into every secret formula, latest technological secret, secrets from google, adwords, keywords, four letter words, you name it. I have a domain, an aweber, a autoresponder, and I have no idea how to put all of this together. As it might be said in my past life as a pilot, I'm all mach and no vector. I need to go back to square on so that I can better understand what's going on, and where to go next.
Thanks for letting me vent my frustration. Despite having a good understanding of the latest concepts and strategies, I'm have no clue how to put it all together and get started.
Did you read the entire hub above?
Do you really want to know where you are and how you are coming along as an online marketer?
If you do, then read this entire hub because what Mike has written here helps give you a clear assessment.
Hope you didn't just skim over it a bit.
Maybe you're struggling or just looking to improve on something.
At whatever point you're at, after you've read this hub, it will help you to become more aware about where to go starting now.
Thanks Mike
Thanks Mike. I have been feeling overwhelmed as a beginner but after reading your post I'm confident that I'm a Smart Beginner headed in the right direction. Thank you for the postive direction!
I recognize myself per above as a Smart Professional moving to Higher Success- all the while staying plugged into Renegade Professional (I made it over that first hump!) I am building a presence on Facebook, Twitter & Google Buzz (where Smart Marketers engage). I am currently enveloped in Leadership Branding with Direct Response, Coaching Cognition and as a PBN Trainer & Marketing Consultant I am developing PBN for Legal Professionals. "How A "New" Smart Professional Moves To Higher Success" per above is my smart blueprint. Many thanks Mike!
Thanks for laying everything out so clearly, Mike. There's so much to internet marketing and it's easy to get lost or distracted. It's nice to have a clear path set out for you.
Mike,
Great stuff as always. I've been planning to update the graphics on my book, but haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for the push I needed...
Rich
Hi Mike, well, you have just made my Sunday because I fit the category of smart beginner. (Some would find that amusing!!) There is no doubt in my mind now, that I have to go back and ensure that I really plug up the holes in my understanding. You know, this hub page information should maybe be part of Renegade Pro. It's succinct - just what I've been lookig for, because really, it's so easy to get lost in the sea of Renegade learning.
This is a great article, Mike. Thanks for putting it out here. I look forward to more of the same.
Y'vonne
Hi Mike! How about marking "false starter" for me...
I started on the Renegade Pro and went all over the place, from tutorial to tutorial, without actually putting what I'd just learned into action. In other words, I got hung on just learning. Then, I began to let the noise of the internet get to me and I soon joined somebody Else's program and again concerned my self with more and more training without the action.
Well, you did warn my kind in your tutorials:
- " Action+ No Training= Failure"
- " Training+ No Action= Failure"
What every "Smart beginner" has to aim for is:
- "Training + Action = SUCCESS
Wishing everyone the best...
Great article, full of value... I think this is the exact steps to make it fulltime online:
1.) Own Website/Blog
2.) Lead Capture Page
3.) Free Ebook or Free Report on your Landing Page
4.) Email Campaigns for Building Relationships
5.) Monetization
6.) Product Offer (Best-Own Product or mlm)
7.) Merchant Account
Mike,
Thank you for this hub. This is great clarification and even action steps to continue moving forward and doing it in the right direction.
While I'm definitely a smart professional, I need to keep DOING what I've learned and what's working and not get distracted or start off in a whole new direction.
I agree with your reasons for starting with social media before trying PPC. Social media is perfect for polishing techniques and technology before throwing money at ppc.
Thank you for your leadership!

Hi Mike - Thank you so much for your patience. I was one of those who was all over the place. I love this hub I am between a smart beginner and smart professional. This will definitely get my head on straight. I love Renegade Professional and the valuable training. This guide is exactly what I needed.
Mike,
Excellent information! I too am in between a Smart Beginner & 'New' Smart Professional. I too have been all over the place until I found Renegade. Now, I too have to start putting my training into action. Thanks for the PUSH I need towards the right direction. I am half way through reading the "The Renegade Network Marketer". So excited and sooo ready to get it all put together! Keep up the GREAT work!
Thanks Mike,
Once again, you~ve hit the nail square on the head.
I am a smart beginner and am enjoying the Smart Beginner series a lot....everybody who is one, should follow these!
Every time you give us more valuable content to,not only get us on the right path, but move us forward as well.
You say it in your tutorials time and time again,to keep focussing on the tutorials and start implementing them, while not being tempted to get involved with other systems.
It is good to get these reminders every now and then and look forward to see this, and the smart series become integrated in Ren.Pro.
Thanks again,
Jan
Mike,
As always your information is so clear and concise. I am a Smart Beginner. I along with 6 others have collaborated to build a blog together. We have written approximately 50 articles, have done lead capture pages, emails, social media etc. I am working on a SBI website for myself, learning video marketing, and in Hoverson training for Direct Response Marketing. I have so much more to learn from Renegade Pro as it takes time to learn everything in the program. Such great information in detailed click by click training. That's how I was able to learn as I had no background in computers at all.
I thank you so much for continuing to give us trainings, you are a true Go Giver.
Joan
Thank you for that outline. I had started with Renegade Professional like some of the others, but didn't get through the 90 day Action Plan. I'm going to go with some coaching when I can afford it (in about two months). It's just much easier to have someone that knows how to get over the humps there guiding you along the way.
Great post, we have been Twitting and Facebook along with Article distribution. How do you best increase the Backlinks that are indexed by Google?
Thanks, Kim
Been online since January 2010
Paid for traffic = No sales
Have not had any training in marketing my site
In the desert?
Wow, great information, thanks, love the detail and will keep this handy as I get started. Thank you!
Excellent, excellent information, Mike! It was great to meet you at the Renegade Breakthrough Live Event in Portland. I look forward to more of your upcoming articles to help others succeed in internet marketing.
Thanks!
thanks a lot. am definitely smart beginner and bookmarked this site for further reference
Mike,
This is good because I'm just a smartbeginner that needs to go to the next level. I get distracted and thinik that I need to do PPC and waste a lot of money and time because it seems to be quicker. But I need to knowm my nich and my target market first. I need to bring value. thanks for this
Hi, Mike,
Thank you for this excellent, detailed and action-oriented, process to: "ask-yourself-these-questions-do-this-set-of-steps-first-then-move-to-the-next-set-of-steps-until-YOU-get-yourself-where-you-want-to-be".
This training procedure works extremely well with my individual learning and training style. Thanks again!
I've been a Renegade Professional for about a year and have gone in and out of the Back Office numerous times but felt like a kid in a candy shop with all the great training available but not knowing where "Step 1" was or any of the next "Stepping Stones".
I had a coaching session with Bob Young who explained about Alicia and Lisa's training e-book previously titled: "Rich Network Marketer Poor Network Marketer". I went through about half of it, put it down one day and just didn't pick it back up.
Just last week, they sent me an e-mail announcing their new updated version with a new title: "The Lead Conversion Kit".
This came about a day after I had registered for Eric Walker's second "Smart Beginner's" Webinar where he taught us about blogs. His first one re-kindled the smoldering embers of my deeply-rooted passion that never gets extinguished and I was off and running again!!
Now, just a few days later, I get your e-mail asking me: "Are You a Smart Beginner or Smart Professional?" with precise, detailed info explaining the difference and the steps I need to take myself to eventually get to the next level to keep going! Amazing timing for me personally!
It is SO refreshing to have FINALLY found a team of true professionals who are deeply-committed to help ME build my business as you all train, lead and coach me and others along our own individual pathways as you help me help others to "Pay it Forward" in multiple, positive, beneficial ways. In the meantime, as we all navigate our individual ships on the Sea of Life we are all working together to help make this world better than any of us previously found it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am now back on track and you will be hearing more from me as I "grow up" and into a mature Renegade Professional and pay back to others what you and The Team have so unselfishly given to me.
I am especially interested in finding out more about PBN, specifically concerning non-profits along with the pros and cons when compared to a "traditional" online attraction marketing business with my unique niche that I just recently figured out. I'm looking forward to all the discoveries of this "unturned stone" as I continue my training as we set sail on our next "RenPro Journey".
Abundant blessings to you and The Team!
Kelley
What a great Hub Mike! You have so much talent!
My goal has always been to change the industry where people could go full time in this industry in less than a year, instead of the old-school thinking of working the 5 year plan, for most, over 10+ years! :O
This will help to get them there quicker because it helps to shorten their learning curve by helping people know the differnce.
As far as myself, I came in as a 30-year professional marketer. What I did learn here was to switch gears to the Internet because of leaders like you.
I am now in high gear and will be in overdrive very soon when I launch my current coaching program into an affiliate program at: http://RenegadeProfessionalHelp.com
This style of training is changing how future marketing will be conducted. Looks like we are still person to person, just like the olds day, but now with a twist of the Internet.
There are many leaders now who have gone through a lot of your training and can help "Clear The Air" for those of you here that may be feeling lost.
I am so glad to help do my part to make a difference in other people's lives as they join in for the ride of their life!!
It really is kind of simple when you follow Mike's points above. But hiring a personal coach to work with you is always going to speed things up for you BIG time.
Just always keep in mind that the first product you are selling is YOU!
It's not your MLM, your affiliate products, or even your own products. People need to buy you before they buy your products or services.
Why do you think everyone who is in a MLM type of opportunity, are not all successful when they all have the same products, opportunity, and even the same company support? You just need to get this one point.
It does not depend on just what you do or what you know.... it is who you are or whom you become in the process that makes all the difference in the world.
People don't have 5 years to get into profit these days. Many have lost their homes, can't meet their car payments, or having a hard time paying back $80,000 in school loans when they are out of work. We need to help them get into profit ASAP!
Thanks for posting this Hub Mike. Your Marketing Merge Training is really paying off for many new leaders that are now on the rise thanks to leaders like you.
If anyone wants my help, visit www.BobAndolinaCalendar.com and let's talk about your future together.
Good Luck Everyone!
Bob Andolina
Mike,
you really do have a gift for simplifying the challenging.
I am always keen to share your insight.
Keep it coming.
Thanks.
Lee
Mike - Have not had the pleasure of our meeting, however this article seals it. You've created some really great value here.
Having experienced my share of frustration while investing countless hours, days, weeks, etc and substantial moneys into numerous internet gurus and '"shiny objects", it's obvious this article endeavors to SAVE everyone precious resources - most valuable - irreplaceable of which is TIME.
Thanks for staying so closely attuned to your facebook and RP News, etc and adhering to one of your previously listed "essentials", "... listening". It's wonderful to simply be able to enjoy reading a synopsis & not having to invent or reinvent a lost wheel. (IE Best Path to Success)
Hey Mike
Thanks for the insight. I put myself in the Smart Beginner category.
It is nice to have someone help to fill in the blanks, which helps to keep me focused and not jumping from pillar to post and back again.
It is certainly not difficult to lose focus and start doing things that get you distracted from doing what needs to be done at the proper time.
I've recently made the decision to limit who I learn from to a smaller group of people. I realized that all the noise on the Internet can really get you off track. You are one of the individuals who I am now putting my focus on.
There are just too many voices screaming for your attention! Thus, the distractions.
Thanks,
Jay Dyson
Tell me more about Renegade Professionals. Mark@ForesightFinance.net.
Just a suggestion but wouldn't a link to your business be a good idea along with your great advice?
Hi Mike,
As usual, your advice and comments are pure gold and have such a way of bringing me back to focus on where I should be from where I've been wandering wasting both time and money.
I'm a beginner--not sure how smart a beginner I've been--but I definitely have the desire to become a smart beginner; and, I'm willing to do whatever it takes to move forward as a smart beginner. Thanks for the steps you provide for those of us who have a tendency to get off task. Marking off each step from the list as it's accomplished is powerfully motivating for me.
Easily the "smartest" step I've taken as a beginner is hiring Shelly B from Coaching Cognition to be my coach. In a relatively short period of time, Shelly has guided me from a point where I was about to call it quits to actually building my own keyword-focused SBI website. We've worked through finding my niche and target audience; and we're now starting to bookmark and comment on social sites. I highly recommend a coach to anyone who is struggling to build a successful online business.
Thanks again!
Jan
Hi Mike. I've been working through phase 1 at Renegade Professional and have recently gone through all the blogging tutorials. I've got an idea for a niche to target and a question about another dimension I'd like to add, but I'm not sure about.
The niche market, within internet network marketing, is people who are in business to make money so they can support good causes, philanthropists. I haven't done the keyword research yet... but I remember certain reps in previous network marketing companies focusing on this. (I figure I can blog about his specific motivation, and about various causes that my subscribers like.)
The additional dimension is personal development (e.g. goal achieving, getting organized, motivation, etc.) I want to add this because I think I have some valuable insights to share, from my decades of study.
How does that strike you? Is it too many pieces: Network Marketing, Internet Marketing, Philanthropy and Personal Development? If a visitor came to such a blog, would they be blown away? Confused? Or would it be a great feast? I guess people could pick and choose what they read, and just ignore the philanthropy topic or the personal development topic, if they weren't interested in that.
Thanks Mike, I am happy to place myself as a smart beginner/proffesional, I have done all the steps for the happy beginner, I have my own leadcapturepage, email campaaign, free offer etc and a list that grow with 1-5 people everyday in denmark. I have recently started to build my list for recruiting using this website http://jh-wellnesscoach.com and there is some traffic there. I am posting press releases and blog post 2-4 times a week. I am very interested in knowing how to use social network the right way. I have this emotion about it, doing it the wrong way, it is just time consuming. So where do I start and which way do I ggo around! I have one question, how many leads is it possibly to get in a market with very high competetion and 22000 keyword searches a month ca 750 searches a day. with ppc? And How do I market my weightlossproduct on facebook, twitter etc the right way?
Thank you so much for demonstrating active listening and creating this article. I have been going around in circles in the harbor. Thanks to RP, I have a boat, have learned to use all of the equipment on board, know how to navigate, got my merchant marine’s license, even know my destination (niche); you have given me the map that will make my trip the shortest, safest and most enjoyable. When I get lost or go adrift, I know where to go and who to call to get me back on course (coaches). I am now confident and can’t wait to get started on my maiden voyage. I am looking forward to all of your future articles. Keep them coming, Captain.
Tom
Mike Great Content.
I would say I am a somewhat 'Seasoned' Smart Professional. I have Renegade Professional to thank for that. I will be launching my book in the coming months and will be getting after it. Your guidance will help shorten the learning curve and laser target my marketing efforts online. Thanks Ed Hyslip

Nice article
Thanks Mike, I am happy to place myself as a smart beginner.
I don’t need anything else to clearly know what my category is.
I am glad to follow you in real a step-by-step method where the first start leads to the first next. The learner doesn’t ask himself how to pass from one step to another.
Thanks God that I have finally reached the coach that deeply know about what he is speaking.
